Ion’s $300 “Drum Rocker” premium drum kit for Rock Band unveiled

Well, that was quick. We mentioned Ion’s fancy drum kit yesterday, which will be released around when Rock Band 2 ships, but works with both Rock Band games, and now we’ve got a price and a press shot of the Drum Rocker. The $300 set has high-durability pads, which are supposed to play quiet and will register the velocity of your hits, but the real win is the re-configurability of the whole set — much like a for-realises electronic drum kit. We’re also really digging the metal-reinforced kick pedal, which seems a major improvement over the junky, difficult pedal packaged with the original game. Only $300? We’ll take two.

Tokyoflash’s Galaxy: a watch only a nerd could love

It’s true. Any decent mother would wonder what on Earth her child was thinking rocking that thing you see above, and even though all those wonderful ladies of the world would be entirely entitled to that curiosity, we can understand the obsession. On its surface, this timepiece and its cryptic display is unquestionably ugly — even the “stainless steel” band reeks of cereal box quality. But there’s just something about those flashy lights that stirs the soul of nerds everywhere, making it seem quite the bargain at $132.85. It’s okay, we won’t tell mommy.

22-foot tall robot crafted entirely from excess styrofoam

Building a big robot is nothing to congratulate yourself on, but doing it in this manner is certainly worthy of a little self-indulgence. The creature you see standing before you is a 22-foot tall Styrobot constructed entirely from spare polystyrene packing materials, and no, each piece didn’t just show up that way. Michael Salter managed to whittle away on this beast until its completion, and now we’re hearing that it’ll be going on a short demonstration tour before being “decommissioned.” We say throw a brain in there and see what happens when you cut it loose.

Anti-terrorist drill reveals Segway attack plan, legions of embarrassed patrolmen

Ah, ha! So, that Chinese S.W.A.T. team we caught ridin’ dirty on Segways earlier this week actually had a reason to be carrying on like they were — they were performing anti-terrorist drills in preparation for security during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Comically enough, the drill was said to be one of “rapid deployment,” though we aren’t told how many spills were taken when officers tried to actually maneuver one of these things around, aim at a target, pull a brown bag down around their head and keep it from spontaneously reversing. Just one question guys: what’s with the tiny guns?

Limited edition Metal Gear Solid 4 watch surfaces

Need some way to express your adoration for Solid Snake when not inside the house? Then check out this limited edition piece, would you? The Metal Gear Solid 4 watch will reportedly arrive individually numbered from 1 to 500 alongside a “Konami certificate of authenticity approved by Hideo Kojima.” You’ll also get a nifty gift box to hold the water resistant timepiece in when it’s not flanking your wrist, but only if you manage to score one before the legions of other hardcore fans do. Oddly enough, there’s some sort of “pre-order” going on in the read link below, but we wouldn’t count on that being the most reliable method for procuring the £99.99 ($197) device when it’s released in October.

Meet Hasbro’s Ampbot, the mother of all Rollys
Cross a Segway with a Rolly and Miuro and out pops this A.M.P. soaked in a grey-goo afterbirth of Robotic procreation. The two-wheeled, dancing A.M.P. (Automated Music Personality or Ampbot) from Sega-Hasbro stands 2.4-feet tall and features a MP3 or iPod cradle on its back, stereo speakers, and the ability to follow and interact with its owner. There’s a 5-inch mid-range speaker in the chest and a pair of smaller tweeters in the shoulders for a total output of 12 watts. Osamu Takeuchi of Sega Toys says, “The owner can also enjoy being chased around the house by the robot.” Uh, yippee? The Ampbot and controller require 6x D and 3x AAA batteries for about 10-hours of continuous music. The stalking begins November for $745 $500 in the US and Japan.

Update: Embedded video courtesy of Impress now available after the break. Be warned: the price tag is starting to look modest even at the cost of our own destruction.
